In the 20th century, Mongolia conducted its first population census in 1918 followed by 1935, 1944, 1956, 1963, 1969, 1979, 1989 and 2000. The first census of the 21st century was conducted in 2010 and the first register based Population and Housing by census was conducted in 2015.
According to the article 7.1 of the Law on Statistics of Mongolia, the Population and Housing Census is conducted every 10 years, the By census every 5 years, Article 8.1 of Law on Population and Housing Census states a national census shall be held in every 10 years, and article 8.2 of the Law states “the census shall be announced not less than two years before the census period ". The census will be held in 2020 and the census period was approved by the Resolution No: 76 of Parliament of Mongolia in 2017 and Resolution No. 77 of Census Committee.
On 22 February 2018, the first meeting of Census Commission was organized and the Action plan of 2020 Population and Housing Census of Mongolia, and Appointment of the Aimag and Capital City Census Commissions" were approved.
Chairman of the State Census Commission is H.E. U.Khurelsukh, Prime Minister of Mongolia, and the Population and Housing census of Mongolia will be conducted for 7 days starting from midnight of January 8-9th, 2020.
